Where Does the Racing Checkered Flag Come From?
The earliest known use of a black and white checker pattern on a flag was at the Glidden Tours, a road rally tournament that took place in 1906. Each track was split into several sections, and racing officials who recorded lap times at the end of each section were known as ‘checkers.’ To identify themselves to rally car drivers, each official was outfitted with such a flag.
