History & Meaning of the Flag of the Vatican City

The flag of the Vatican was adopted on June 7, 1929, the same year Pope Pius XI and Italy signed the Lateran Treaty, creating the independent state of Vatican City. The design is based on the yellow and white flag initially used by the Papal States, with the addition of the coat of arms. The emblem includes the crossed keys of Saint Peter, also known as the gold and silver Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and a depiction of the Papal tiara.
