Celebrating 246 Years and Counting!

Not only is the 14th Flag Day, but it's also the birthday of one of America's most trusted institutions: the US Army. This makes June 14th one of the most patriotic days in America. While celebrating our symbol of freedom, we also celebrate the creation of America's oldest military branch - with today being the 247th birthday!

“I have, this day, voluntarily enlisted myself, as a soldier, in the American continental army, for one year, unless sooner discharged: And I do bind myself to conform, in all instances, to such rules and regulations, as are, or shall be, established for the government of the said. Army.”

The very first members of the US Army signed this oath in 1775. Even centuries later, the Army continues to be the largest branch of the Armed Forces, consisting of proud men and women who continue to provide peace and security for us all. In honor of this special day in American history, here are some lesser-known facts about the US Army.

1. 31 out of the 46 Presidents have served in the Army. Seventeen presidents even actively fought in wars during their time in service.

2. The Army is older than the Country. Technically, the Army existed a year before the US officially became its own country.

3. Although they were the first branch of the Armed Forces, they were the last ones to pick a song. They didn’t have an official song until 1956.

4. The Air Force was part of the Army until 1946 when they finally broke off to become their own branch.

5. The US Army wasn’t only protection-oriented. They were also in charge of exploring and mapping America. Landmarks such as Pike's Peak and the Grand Canyon were first explored by the Army.

Happy birthday, US Army, and thank you for your continual service in fighting for our country’s freedom.
