What is National Military Appreciation Month?
National Military Appreciation Month, also known as NMAM, is a month-long observance in the United States dedicated to honoring service members and veterans of the US Armed Forces. NMAM includes a variety of more specific day-long observances, such as Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day.
When is National Military Appreciation Month?
NMAM takes place each year during the entire month of May.
When was National Military Appreciation Month Established?
On February 9, 1999, Senator John McCain proposed to Congress that a month be dedicated to celebrating those serving in and who have served the US Armed Forces. This legislation was passed unanimously on April 30 of the same year. Congress decreed that this observance would be in May since several other military commemorations take place during this time.
National Military Appreciation Month Observances
NMAM includes many day-long observances honoring the US military, such as:
Victory in Europe Day: May 8
Also known as VE Day, Victory in Europe Day celebrates the end of World War II. More specifically, it commemorates the day on which Nazi Germany declared an unconditional surrender to the Allies. VE Day is a great opportunity to thank any World War II veterans in your community and ask about their experiences.
Military Spouse Day: Friday Before Mother’s Day
Military Spouse Appreciation Day is held each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day. This observance honors the spouses and partners of active-duty members in the US Armed Forces. Reach out to military spouses and families in your community to offer your care and support.
Armed Forces Day: Third Saturday in May
In addition to NMAM, all branches of the US Armed Forces are honored each year on the third Saturday of May. Armed Forces Day is celebrated nationwide with air shows, parades, and military base open houses.
Memorial Day: Last Monday in May
Held on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day is a more somber observance, remembering all those who have died during their service. Originally established to honor soldiers who had fought in the American Civil War, Memorial Day now includes all fallen service members.
One common way to show respect and gratitude is by placing American stick flags at the graves of Armed Forces members at your local cemetery. Memorial Day is also a half-staff holiday, so be sure to lower your American flag. If you would like to receive half-staff reminders, check out our free notification service.
