Excerpt:
In 1831 under Gregory XVI, the Rome Civic Guard was shown with a new, yellow-white flag -- probably issued at the same time as the infantry, whose earliest yellow-white flag, first attested in 1832, has already been treated. The Guard color was likewise divided diagonally, although in the opposite direction -- from upper fly to lower hoist.
