Guam Flag History
The original flag design was created by Mrs. Helen L. Paul, the wife of a naval officer in America. This design was approved by Governor Roy C. Smith in 1917 and later became the official territory flag for Guam in 1948. The flag was then modified in 1960 to add the red border.
Guam Flag Meaning
The blue background symbolizes the ocean. The oval in the center of the flag is shaped like a sling stone that was used by the ancient Chamoru. The seagoing canoe, also known as a flying proa, depicts the courage of the first people who traveled across the Pacific Ocean. The coconut tree growing in the infertile sand represents the determination of the first settlers that overcame whatever natural causes challenged them.
