History & Meaning of the Jamaica Flag

The Jamaican national flag was adopted on August 6, 1962, to celebrate Jamaican Independence Day. The government ran a competition to develop flag designs, and the Jamaican House of Representatives made the final decision. Initially, the design had horizontal stripes, but since it was too similar to the flag of Tanganyika, this was changed to the diagonal cross, or ‘saltire,’ we know today.

The colors of the flag of Jamaica have changed in meaning over time. At first, green represented the land, gold stood for the sun, and black symbolized hardships. In 1996, the Committee to Examine National Symbols and National Observances recommended that the meanings be changed: Green now depicts vegetation and hope, gold is for wealth and sunshine, and black celebrates the strength and creativity of the Jamaican people.
