History & Meaning of the Jordan Flag

The Jordanian flag was officially adopted on April 16, 1928. Its design is based on the flag used to symbolize the Arab Revolt, an uprising against the Ottoman Empire that took place during World War I. The main difference between the two flags is the order of the colored stripes and the addition of a white star.

Each color represents a different ruling dynasty: White is for the Umayyads, green is for the Fatimid dynasty, black is for the Abbasids, and red is for the Hashemites, the current royal family of Jordan. The seven-pointed star symbolizes the seven verses of the Al-Fatiha and the seven hills that the capital city of Amman is built on.
