History & Meaning of the Portugal Flag

The flag of the Portuguese Republic that we recognize today was initially used on December 1, 1910, after the fall of the constitutional monarchy. However, the design would not become the official national flag until June 30, 1911. 

The flags used in Portugal’s earlier history were based on the monarchical coat of arms and used blue and white. As the monarchy's power was weakened and the Portuguese people revolted, new colors were chosen to represent the rebellion: red and green. Today, the color green is said to depict hope, and red is the blood of those who died defending the movement.
