History & Meaning of the Switzerland Flag

The national flag of Switzerland holds a unique status: Apart from the flag of Vatican City, it is the only perfectly square flag worldwide with a 1:1 ratio. The flag we offer comes in a 2:3 ratio, Switzerland's official civil and state ensign.

The white cross has a long history, starting in the late 13th century. It was used as a field sign, a mark used to identify group members, by the Old Swiss Confederacy. The confederation was a loose organization of several independent states within the Holy Roman Empire, formally achieving independence in 1648 through the Treaty of Westphalia. The current Swiss flag was adopted on October 11, 1841, when it was declared the uniting symbol of the Swiss cantons.
