MORE ABOUT THE FRENCH FLAG

One of the oldest and most influential flags in existence, the French flag is deeply symbolic. It drew on a few different sources for its inspiration: the royal French army, the storming of the Bastille, and ancient French folklore. In the days before the French Revolution, the royal French flag consisted of a golden fleur-de-lis and a blue shield on a white background, which was where the flag took its royal shade of blue. The Paris militia, famously, wore red-and-blue knotted ribbons (sewn on their hats) into battle during the French Revolution. So the flag took its crimson shade of red from them. And lastly, according to French folklore and military legend, the color white was “the ancient and original color of France.” With these three colors in hand, the national flag was born and adopted as the official flag of France in 1790.
