Flag of North Dakota History

The design shown on this flag is derived from the unit banner used by the First North Dakota Infantry during the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the Philippine-American War in 1899. 

The symbols are based on the Great Seal of the United States. The arrows and olive branches in the bald eagle’s talons represent the country’s simultaneous desire for peace and readiness for war. The banner held by the eagle reads “E Pluribus Unum,” the official motto of the US. It translates as “Out of many, one”.
