South Dakota Flag History

South Dakota’s current state flag is based on the one used from 1909 to 1963, with a yellow sun in the center of the flag surrounded by the text “South Dakota / The Sunshine State.” In 1963, the flag was modified to add the state seal inside of the sun. The modern flag only has a slight change: In 1992, the state nickname on the flag was updated to “The Mount Rushmore State.”
