Wisconsin State Flag History

The first official Wisconsin flag was adopted in 1863, which placed the state coat of arms over a dark blue field. In the coat of arms is a shield with four symbols: a plow for agriculture, a pick and shovel for mining, an arm and hammer for industry, and lastly, an anchor for sailing. On either side of the coat of arms is a sailor and a yeoman, representing Wisconsin’s workers on the sea and land. 

From 1979 to 1981, the flag was modified to add the state name and year Wisconsin was admitted to the Union (1848).
