ABOUT THE STATE FLAG OF MAINE

The original Maine flag was first adopted in 1901 and consisted of a pine tree and a blue North Star on a light tan background. At the time, Maine was the northernmost state, represented by the North Star imagery.

The 1901 Maine flag was changed to the current official state flag in 1909. The current flag’s coat of arms features symbols such as a moose and pine tree emblem on a shield. The shield is flanked on either side by a sailor and a farmer, with a ribbon below reading the state’s name. Above the shield is the North Star and the Latin motto “Dirigo,” which means “I direct.”
