About the Maine Flag
The original Maine flag was first adopted in 1901 and consisted of a pine tree and star. The star was a blue North Star. At the time, Maine was the northernmost state, which was why the flag had this star. This flag has a light tan background..
The 1901 Maine flag was changed to the current official state flag in 1909. The current flag’s coat of arms features symbols such as a moose and pine tree emblem on a shield. The shield is supported by a sailor and a farmer. The ribbon below has the state’s name. Above the shield is the North Star and the Latin motto “Dirigo,” which means “I direct.”
