Romanian Flag Meaning & History

The tricolor design Romania uses today was first formally adopted in 1867 by the region of Wallachia. However, the flag's colors were not codified until 1994, when a flag protocol was introduced in the Constitution of Romania. Before 1867, similar flags with the same color scheme were used, but with horizontal stripes.

This flag’s design became prominent during the Wallachian uprising of 1821. Each color represented a different aspect of the rebellion: blue for liberty, yellow for justice, and red for fraternity.

Chad Flag vs Romania Flag

The flag of Chad is virtually identical to Romania’s, except the colors are less strictly defined, leading to some variations. Romania initially only used the simple tricolor design, but in 1948, the national coat of arms was added to the center. Chad later adopted its flag in 1960, when Romania’s flag still had the coat of arms. After the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s government in 1989, the coat of arms was removed, leading to both countries sharing the same design for their national flag.
