Vermont Flag Meaning & History
The first flag that could be said to represent Vermont was the Green Mountain Boys flag, flown by the group of the same name in 1777.
In 1804, Vermont adopted a version of the American flag with 17 stars and 17 stripes, representing the 17 states of the US, with the text “Vermont” at the top. This design was modified in 1837 to have just 13 stripes and changed the canton to include the state seal inside a large star.
The modern version of Vermont’s flag was first used by the Vermont militia during the American Civil War. This design was composed of the state coat of arms on a dark blue field. It was officially adopted as the state flag on June 1, 1923.
