Afghanistan Flag History & Meaning

Afghanistan’s flag was adopted on August 13, 2013, but is based on similar designs that used the same colors all the way back to 1928. The black stripe represents Afghanistan’s difficult past as a British protectorate, the red stands for the blood of its people who fought for independence, and the green is for hope and prosperity. The center emblem depicts a mosque with a mihrab, a marking that indicates in which direction the holy city of Mecca lies.
