Where Does the Racing Checkered Flag Come From?
The first recorded use of a checkered flag in racing was at the Glidden Tours, a road rally in 1906. Each course was divided into sections, and the race officials stationed at the end of each section who took lap times were known as ‘checkers.’ These officials used black and white checkered flags as identification.
