Whether flown from a flagpole or waved from track stands, our checkered flags are a must-have for racing fans and officials. These flags are proudly made in America from nylon, a lightweight material that dries quickly and flies even in mild winds. Furthermore, our checkered race flags are finished with sewn edges, which helps prevent fraying.

Each flag comes equipped with a sturdy canvas header and brass grommets for easy attachment to an outdoor flagpole or for hanging indoors.

Where Does the Racing Checkered Flag Come From?

The earliest known use of a black and white checker pattern on a flag was at the Glidden Tours, a road rally tournament that took place in 1906. Each track was split into several sections, and racing officials who recorded lap times at the end of each section were known as ‘checkers.’ To identify themselves to rally car drivers, each official was outfitted with such a flag.

Are you looking for a mounted finish flag? We also carry checkered racing flags that come finished on a wooden staff. We recommend using our checkered triangle pennants for decoration at parties or children’s cart tracks.
