​3 COVID Safe Ways to Honor our Heroes

With reports of wildfires burning across the United States and Firefighters being called to action, we are reminded of the risks these heroes take every day to keep our communities safe. The first weekend of October recognizes National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day Weekend, a national tribute to honor all firefighters who died in the line of duty. In these unprecedented times, some of us are not able to show our solidarity by gathering in large groups. Here are 3 ways you can show your support on Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial Day during 2020.

1. Fly US Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Fallen Firefighters on October 4, 2020

American flags across the country will be flown half-staff on Sunday, October 4, 2020 to honor Fallen Firefighters. This includes the U.S. Capitol and the White House, as well as buildings in your local community. If you can't lower your flag to half-staff, you can tie a mourning bow to the top of the flagpole.

2. Light the Night

Have you noticed landmarks and fire departments in your community, glowing in red lights? These buildings are participating in Light the Night, a tribute initiated by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, to show support for those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice and in hopes of providing comfort to mourning loved ones.

3. Show Your Respect and Solidarity this Weekend, Virtually

Each year, America honors its fallen fire heroes during a National Memorial Service at the site of the National Fallen Firefighters’ Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This year, On October 4, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will broadcast a National Tribute to honor America’s fallen firefighters.
