Most Common Flag Display Mistakes
The American flag symbolizes the nation’s history, values, and unity. The US Flag Code sets clear standards for proper use to ensure it is always displayed with dignity. While adhering to the full Code can feel overwhelming, identifying the most common display mistakes can help ensure your display conveys the respect you intend to convey.
Rules for Displaying the American Flag
Thanks to the US Flag Code, it’s easy to identify what is and isn’t considered a proper display of the American flag. However, the length of the Code can make it difficult to tell which sections apply to your situation. Here, we’ll break down common mistakes people make with their flag display and what the Flag Code suggests to do instead.
How to Display the American Flag with Other Flags
Several common display mistakes relate to how the American flag is positioned and set up with other flags. If additional flags are displayed alongside the US flag, specific rules apply depending on what those flags are. However, in almost all cases, the American flag must be displayed on the far left. For state and international flags, the remaining flags should be in alphabetical order following the US flag. If the American flag must be displayed between other flags, it should be on the highest flagpole in the center.
Another common error is when the American flag is flown on the same flagpole as another flag of the same size. When on the same pole as another flag, the American flag must be at least one size larger and above all other flags.
How to Display the Flag Vertically
An easy mistake to make when displaying the American flag vertically is using the wrong positioning. When hanging the flag against a wall, the Union or canton must be in the upper left corner. However, if the flag is displayed in a window, the Union should appear in the upper left corner from the passersby's perspective instead. Additionally, the lower two corners shouldn’t be tied down, but should be let to fall freely instead.
How to Display the Flag on a Wall
When displaying the American flag flat on a wall, only use flags without fringe. American flags with fringe shouldn’t be hung directly on a wall, but instead can be displayed on a wall-mounted post. If the flag is part of a display with another flag on crossed poles, the American flag should be on the left.
Displaying the American flag with care shows respect for the flag and the country it represents. By following the guidelines of the US Flag Code, you can avoid common errors and ensure the flag is presented correctly. Whether flown with other flags, hung vertically, or placed on a wall, these rules help preserve the flag’s integrity and meaning.
