President’s Day: Influence on our Flag
Prior to the 20th century, all acts dictating the regulation of the American flag were created by Congress. In 1912, President Taft established proportional regulations and the precise arrangement for all future US flags. Eisenhower made modifications in 1959 to reflect the addition of Alaska and Hawaii to the nation. Without the accumulation of new states, we assume that no president will be able to pass new legislature regarding the flag on their own.
In 2006, President George W. Bush signed a bill, along with the house and senate, called the Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005. This act of Congress prohibits real estate management organizations from restricting homeowners from displaying the flag of the United States on their property. If you’ve run into problems with your homeowners’ association prohibiting you from flying the American flag, get involved and make change happen in your community! After all, President’s day was enacted to make a difference in the lives of our nation’s workers. We can all make changes that hit home!
