Brunei Flag Meaning & History
The flag of Brunei, adopted on September 29, 1959, is based on the previous national flag’s design. The previous design, adopted in 1906, had the same yellow background and stripes but didn’t have the red seal.
The yellow field represents the Sultan of Brunei and royalty. The two white and black diagonal stripes stand for the Chief Ministers who advise the Sultan. The red national crest contains a crescent moon referencing Islam, above which is a royal parasol. The hands on either side of the seal symbolize the government’s responsibility for the welfare of its people.
