Connecticut Flag Meaning & History
The design on Connecticut’s state flag was inspired by the seal of the original Saybrook Colony, created by George Fenwick when the colony was established in 1639. However, the flag’s seal was adjusted to have only three grapevines instead of 15. The wording and position of the state motto were also altered.
The flag containing this modified seal was first proposed by Governor Owen Coffin in 1895 as the state flag and later approved by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1897.
The three grapevines represent the three oldest settlements in the state: Windsor, Hartford, and Wethersfield. The flag also features the Latin inscription “Qui transtulit sustinet,” which means “He who transplanted still sustains.” This motto is based on the 80th Psalm of the Bible.
