Dominican Republic Flag Meaning & History
The Dominican Republic flag was adopted on November 6, 1863, following the country’s independence in 1844. It was designed by Juan Pablo Duarte y Díez, one of the country's founding fathers.
The white cross represents Christianity and salvation, while the blue fields stand for liberty and the red for the bloodshed during the fight for independence. In the center of the Dominican flag is the national coat of arms, which features a shield with the same design as the flag, flanked by bay laurel and palm fronds.
