The flag of Equatorial Guinea was officially adopted on August 21, 1979, but was flown as early as October 12, 1968, the country’s independence day. The green stripe stands for agriculture and the nation’s natural resources. White represents peace, red is for the bloodshed in the fight for independence, and the blue triangle symbolizes the sea.
In the center is the national coat of arms, depicting a gray shield with a silk cotton tree. At the top are six stars, representing the mainland and five major islands that comprise the country. Underneath is the national motto of Unidad, Paz, Justicia, which translates to “Unity, Peace, Justice.”
