Ethiopia Flag Meaning & History

The green, yellow, and red tricolor was first adopted in 1897 by Menelik II, the Emperor of Ethiopia at the time. However, the order of the colors was reversed on this flag, and the modern order was used starting in 1913. In 1996, the national emblem was added to the flag, which is a yellow star inside a blue circle. The shade of the circle was changed in 2009.

The star emblem symbolizes Ethiopia’s bright future and is closely associated with the current national government. The green stripe stands for labor and development, the yellow is for hope, and the red is for the bloodshed in protecting Ethiopia.
