Gabon Flag Meaning & History
Gabon formally adopted its first national flag in 1959, a year after it became an autonomous republic within the French colonies. The original design had a narrower yellow stripe and featured the French flag in the canton, which were both removed in 1960.
The green stripe represents the region's natural resources, such as lumber from trees. The yellow is for the sun and the Equator, which passes through the country. The blue symbolizes the South Atlantic Ocean.
