Greenland Flag Meaning
Greenland achieved home rule within the Kingdom of Denmark in 1978 and ran a competition to create a national flag design. More entries were submitted after the first round failed to produce any winners. The design that finally won was created by Thue Christiansen and was adopted on June 21, 1985.
The white stripe on Greenland’s flag stands for the glaciers and ice that cover most of the island. The red symbolizes the surrounding ocean, with the circle representing the sun partially sunk below the horizon.
