Guatemala Flag Meaning & History
The current flag of Guatemala was adopted on August 17, 1871, and is based on the flag of the Federal Republic of Central America, a state that existed from 1823 to 1841. The light blue stripes symbolize the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans surrounding the country, while the white is for peace.
In the center is Guatemala’s coat of arms. Inside is a scroll that marks the date Central America gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. On top of the scroll is a resplendent quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala. Below the scroll are two crossed rifles and swords, representing honor and defense of the country. Surrounding all these elements is a crown of bay laurel, which stands for victory.
