Kazakhstan Flag Meaning & History

The modern flag of Kazakhstan was first adopted on June 4, 1992, and was designed by the artist Shaken Niyazbekov. The design features a golden sun and steppe eagle in the center, with a koshkar-muiz pattern on the left, which translates to ‘horns of the ram.’

The sun represents energy and life, while the eagle has been an important historical emblem for the Kazakh people of the region, symbolizing power and freedom. The ornamental pattern on the left stands for Kazakhstani art and culture and the importance of goat and sheep herding in the country. The blue background is for the sky, water, and unity.
