Latvia Flag Meaning & History
The first recorded mention of the Latvian flag’s design comes from a medieval chronicle, which noted that a red flag with a white stripe was flown during a battle in 1279. According to legend, this design was created when a chief of the Latgalian tribe was wounded in an earlier battle and placed on a sheet. The sheet directly under him stayed white, but the rest was stained red with blood. However, the flag would not be officially adopted on a national level until June 15, 1921.
The Latvian flag was outlawed from 1940 to 1990, when the nation was part of the USSR. It was re-adopted on February 27, 1990.
