Libya Flag Meaning & History

Libya’s current national flag was first adopted on December 24th, 1951, during the creation of the Kingdom of Libya. It was designed by Minister of Defense Omar Faiek Shennib. The flag was replaced following a coup in 1969 and reinstated in 2011.

The red stripe symbolizes the bloodshed in the fight for independence. Black is in remembrance of the period between 1934 and 1943 when Italy occupied the region under Mussolini’s rule. Green stands for agriculture and prosperity. The white crescent moon and star are inspired by the traditional flag of the Senusiyya, an Islamic group that lives in Libya.
