Mali Flag Meaning & History

The first national Malian flag was adopted in 1959 upon Mali’s independence from France. This flag had the same tricolor design as the modern version but had a black Kanaga figure in the center. The Kanaga was removed on March 1, 1961, since the majority of Mali’s Muslim population viewed the depiction of human beings in art as against their faith.

The green represents the region's fertile land, while gold is for the natural resources. The red symbolizes the bloodshed in the fight for independence.
