Malta Flag Meaning & History

Many of Malta’s national flags throughout the 20th century were variants of the British Blue Ensign. In 1943, the white and red bicolor design arose as an unofficial civil flag. This flag also had the George Cross in the upper left corner but on a dark blue rectangle. The rectangle was removed and replaced with a red outline on September 21, 1964.

Red and white are ancient Maltese colors traditionally used by the military, such as the flag of the Knights of Malta. The George Cross in the corner is a British military award for courage, awarded to the island in 1942 for its participation in World War II.
