Mauritius Flag Meaning & History
The Mauritian flag, also known as the Four Bands or Les Quatre Bandes, was adopted on March 12, 1968, when the country declared independence from the British Empire. It was designed by school teacher Gurudutt Moher.
The four colors were initially chosen to represent the major political parties in power during the 1960s. Each color now has an official meaning as well. The red symbolizes the fight for independence, the blue is for the Indian Ocean, the yellow is for guiding light and freedom, and the green stands for the island’s agriculture and landscape.
