Moldova Flag Meaning & History

The modern Republic of Moldova flag is based on the 1917 state flag of the Moldavian Democratic Republic, a horizontal blue, yellow, and red tricolor. The stripes were changed to be vertical in 1990 when Moldova split from the USSR, and the national coat of arms was added to the center. Originally, the coat of arms was not visible on the reverse side, but this was updated in 2010.

The coat of arms depicts a golden eagle holding a cross in its beak for religion and an olive branch in its claw for peace. The shield on top of the eagle contains traditional Moldovan symbols, such as an auroch, rose, crescent, and star.
