Mongolia Flag Meaning & History

The first iteration of Mongolia’s modern national flag was adopted in 1945. The only difference was a yellow star above the Soyombo to represent the nation’s socialist government. The flag was designed by the artist Dodiin Choidog. On January 12, 1992, the star was removed when the country became a representative democracy.

The blue stripe symbolizes Tengri, a figure in traditional Mongolian religion. The red stripes on either side stand for eternal prosperity. The yellow symbol on the left is a Soyombo, a character used in Mongolian and Tibetan Buddhism. Each element in the symbol has a specific meaning. From top to bottom, they are fire, the sun, the moon, arrow points, justice, the Taijitu (known as the yin and yang symbol in English), and the walls of a fort.
