Montenegro Flag Meaning & History

The first historical Montenegrin flag to display the gold double-headed eagle on a red field was used in the mid-15th century. It was used as the state flag for the region of Zeta, which was ruled by the Crnojević family. A modified version of this design was re-adopted on July 13, 2004.

Red and gold are ancient Montenegrin colors traditionally used on medieval military flags. The double-headed eagle and lion represent the unity of church and state, in addition to the scepter and globus cruciger held by the eagle. The crown above the eagle is inspired by the coat of arms for the noble family of Petrović-Njegoš.
