Nepal Flag Meaning & History

The national flag of Nepal is several centuries old. The first recorded use of a red flag composed of two triangles was in the mid-19th century. However, this design used isosceles triangles instead, with a green outline and human faces on the white crescent moon and sun.

In the 1930s, the triangles were changed to have a right angle, and the outline became blue. The modern design was adopted on December 16, 1962, removing faces from the crescent and sun.

The red fields represent bravery, while the blue outline is for harmony and peace. The white crescent moon symbolizes the cold Himalayas, while the sun is for the hot lowlands known as Terai.
