Peru Flag Meaning & History

Peru’s flag vertical red and white triband design was first adopted on May 31, 1822. However, in the center was a red sun, representing the Incan sun god Inti. This symbol was substituted with the national coat of arms on February 25, 1825. The final version with a modified coat of arms was adopted on March 31, 1950.

The red stripes symbolize the blood shed by those who fought for Peru’s independence from the Spanish Empire. The white stripe is for peace. The coat of arms depicts a shield containing a vicuña, a quinine tree, and a cornucopia of coins. Above the shield is a civic crown, an ancient Roman military award for citizens who saved someone else’s life. On the sides of the shield are palm and laurel branches, representing victory and glory.
