Polish Flag Colors, Meaning & History

Poland’s flag was officially adopted in 1919. However, the flag’s history stretches back to the 14th century, to the late Piast period, when the Piast dynasty ruled Polish lands. Over time, many different designs for Poland’s flag were created, but most shared several standard features: the colors red and white and the symbol of an eagle.

The red and white stripes are derived from the coat of arms for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a confederation of Poland and Lithuania that existed from 1569 to 1795. The eagle comes from the 14th-century reign of King Ladislaus the Short, who decreed that a white eagle on a red background should be the official Banner of the Kingdom of Poland. The choice of using an eagle has special significance, as it represents the sovereignty of the Polish state.
