History & Meaning of the Poland Flag

The national flag of Poland was officially adopted in 1919. However, the flag’s history stretches back to the 14th century to a time known as the late Piast period, when the Piast dynasty ruled Polish lands. There were many different designs for Poland’s flag over time, but most shared several standard features: the colors of red and white and the symbol of an eagle.

The red and white stripes are derived from the coat of arms for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a confederation of Poland and Lithuania that existed from 1569 to 1795. The eagle comes from the 14th-century reign of King Ladislaus the Short, who decreed that a white eagle on a red background should be the official Banner of the Kingdom of Poland. The choice of using an eagle has special significance, as it represents the sovereignty of the Polish state.
