San Marino Flag Meaning & History

San Marino’s flag traces its history back to 1797 when the Supreme Council of the nation created a white and blue cockade. However, a flag of the same colors would not be hoisted until 1829, when it was flown at the tower of Guaita. The national coat of arms was later added to the design, with the last change to the coat of arms and the shade of blue set on July 22, 2011.

The white stripe represents peace, and the blue is for liberty. The coat of arms shows a shield with three towers, depicting the San Marino towers of Guaita, Cesta, and Montale. The crown above symbolizes sovereignty, while the oak and laurel branches on either side stand for stability and defense of self-rule.
