History & Meaning of the Saudi Arabia Flag

The Saudi Arabian flag design is based heavily on those of precursor states that contained large amounts of land in the Arabian Peninsula. The current design was adopted in 1973, though similar designs have been used since 1744, when the first Saudi state, also called the Emirate of Diriyah, was established.

The inscription on the flag is called the Shahada, an essential Islamic creed. Translated to English, it reads, “There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” Green is used as a background color as it is considered a symbol of Heaven in Islam. Finally, the image of a sword represents a strict application of justice.
