Slovakia Flag Meaning & History
The modern Slovakian flag is inspired by a variety of flags used during the Slovak Uprising in 1848, many of which were red, blue, and white tricolors in various orders. The region of Slovakia adopted a white, blue, and red tricolor flag while it was part of Czechoslovakia in the mid-20th century. The current design was finalized on September 3, 1992, when the national coat of arms was added to the flag.
The white, blue, and red stripes are traditional Pan-Slavic colors. The coat of arms features a double cross, a symbol of Christianity. The cross stands above three hills, representing the three mountain ranges of Tatra, Fatra, and Matra.
