Tonga Flag Meaning & History

The Kingdom of Tonga flag was first used in 1866 but was not officially adopted until November 4, 1875. It was designed by King George Tupou I, the Prime Minister, and Prince Uelingatoni Ngu Tupoumalohi. According to the national Constitution, the flag’s design can never be altered or replaced.

The red cross in the canton symbolizes Christianity, the country's majority religion. The white field represents purity, while the red represents the blood of Jesus Christ lost during the crucifixion.
