Turkmenistan Flag Meaning & History

The first version of Turkmenistan’s modern flag was adopted in 1992, following the country’s independence after the dissolution of the USSR. An exhibit was held at which artists from across the nation displayed their proposal for the national flag. The winning design was made official on February 19 and flown for the first time on March 21. The flag has undergone two minor changes since, creating the current design.

The green background and white crescent are symbols of Islam, the country’s majority religion. The green also represents prosperity and peace, while the five white stars stand for the five regions of Turkmenistan: Ahal, Balkan, Daşoguz, Lebap, and Mary.

The stripe on the left contains five guls, patterns used in traditional carpet design. Each gul represents an ethnic group of Turkmenistan: the Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur, and Ersari. The olive branches below the guls symbolize peace.
