Turks and Caicos Flag Meaning & History
The first iteration of the Turks and Caicos flag, adopted in 1889, was a British Blue Ensign with the island’s badge on the right. The badge was replaced with the region’s lesser coat of arms in 1968 and modified slightly in 1999.
The shield depicted on the flag forms part of the national coat of arms. At the top are a queen conch shell and a spiny lobster, symbolizing the region’s fishing industry. Below is a Turk’s Head cactus representing the islands’ flora. The cactus gained its name from its similarity to a Turkish fez hat and is the origin of the ‘Turks’ part of the country’s name.
